the exhibition as a stimulus to critical thinking |
Conceptual in nature, Joan Fontcuberta's œuvre, first and foremost, analyses the transmission of information.
Botanical science (Herbarium series), zoology (Fauna), astronomy (Constellations), the History of art and geography (Orogenesis) and finally religion (Miracles & Co.… ), provide the artist with his rhetoric of these disciplines in order that he may denounce their power of seduction and manipulation.
Resembling a natural history museum from a scenographic point of view, the Mantes-la-Jolie museum space proved wholly conducive to the exhibition of a body of work that often takes the form of scientific, zoological and botanical pseudo-devices.
The exhibition revealed a close concordance between the very substance of the artist's work and the vocation of the Museum: to hone the visitor's gaze and provoke a critical stimulus in the link between that visitor and what is displayed.
