the delirium of reality |
The works of Juan Ugalde, an artist born in Bilbao in 1958, comprise photographs enhanced by painting and collage on canvas. They are a reflection on contemporary Spain, the broad mass of Spanish people, the Spain of urban outskirts, farmers dressed in their Sunday best, racegoers, suburbanites, immigrants and rock musicians at Basque dances.
Refusing to sketch the portrait of some particular tribe, the artist is interested, above all, in humanity. In what is at once both real and absurd in Humanity. A duality that, in his mind, stems from a certain madness.
The key issue is not so much the appropriation of elements of everyday reality as the poetic transgression thereof, often tinged with humour and irony.
Juan Ugalde thus manipulates the notions of 'Realism' and 'Surrealism', two pictorial traditions deeply rooted in Spain.
Since 2000, Juan Ugalde has also been producing video works.
