Born in Barcelona in 1955, where he lives and works, Joan Fontcuberta pursues a multi-dimensional career as artist, theoretician, teacher and commissioner of exhibitions.
Joan Fontcuberta was invited to become Lecturer and Artist in Residence in a number of institutions, notably in the United States, at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1990 and at Harvard University in 2003 and 2004.
He is one of the major figures in contemporary artistic photography.
Conceptual in nature, his œuvre explores the interstices between art, Science, the new technologies and illusion.
Joan Fontcuberta has published one of the most important works on photography. In this work he looks at the twin destinies of this art form and various disciplines of Knowledge, which have not always kept their promise of truth. 'Le Baiser de Judas (The Kiss of Judas)' was re-published by Actes Sud in 2006.
His work is exhibited in some of the most prestigious museums in Europe and America.
