the official birth of painting |
Gaël Davrinche was born in Saint-Mandé in 1971. He lives and works in Paris.
Gaël Davrinche's initial works comprised an analysis and transcription, onto large-format canvases and paper, of the primary gesture that gives rise to a child's drawing.
Recently, via a series of works directly adapted from those of the great masters in art history, Gaël Davrinche produced a gallery of portraits of those referential artists.
The artist seeks to confront his great models, as if to unravel their secret. He observes and attempts to extract the decisive touch that defines the moment of grace in painting, such as in 'the portrait of Philip IV' by Velásquez or Girl with a pearl earring by Vermeer.
In his structured painting, be it thickly applied or watery in texture, the artist seeks that one fundamental, decisive gesture, the signature that witnessed the official birth of painting.
